Episode 37 – Coming Out Atheist

Coming Out Atheist:  Why Does it Matter?

Chauncey, Paul, and Jesse discuss their past experiences coming out as atheist, how they did it and why.  It’s a personal choice for each individual as to when they come out and in what manner.  If we’re able, most of us come out to different people at different times, in a way that seems best or safest.  At a certain point we move from a point of fear to one of pride in our authentic identity and volunteer time to spread it to others.

  1. It allows us to interact with believers in a respectful way
  2. It dispels common misconceptions about atheism and what it means to be secular
  3. Helps those who have never experienced it understand secular life
  4. Atheism isn’t a belief system!
  5. Promotes the benefits of secular thinking and morality
  6. Allows us to find other secular folks who don’t know there are others like them out there
  7. Accomplishes outreach to people who believe differently and establishes who we are
  8. Changes the narrative so folks hear the truth about who we are rather than someone else’s talking points
  9. We take pride in who we are and want others to know it
  10. It’s fun to go out and meet people and discuss/share ideas
  11. Be an example to others that it’s ok to be an out atheist

Episode 36 – Thinking About Thinking

We are all thinking all the time.  With some of us it might not always appears so, but our minds are running constantly.  Opinions, beliefs, evidence,  facts; all these elements combine and form in our minds.

Critical thought is a manner of thinking that will lead to greater and more factual understanding of the universe.  It relies on measurements and evidence and avoiding problems in thinking to reveal truths and separate them from falsehoods.

But truth is an ongoing process.  Truth is always tentative.  In this discussion Jesse and Paul get into the complexity of it all to break it down and simplify it.

In this episode we rely pretty heavily on a piece of writing called “A Field Guide to Critical Thinking” by James Lett.  Check it out and let us know what we got wrong in this episode.

Episode 35 – Feeding on the News

How do you learn about the world?  It’s impossible to learn about most things directly, so most of us rely on news of some sort.  News.  It’s usually bad, that’s what makes it newsworthy.  How to stay informed then, about what’s important?

We at the Secular Hubcast encourage continuous and lifelong learning.  And sometimes that means learning some of the tough truths in life.  Join us for stories that are relevant to you..today.

Episode 34, Meow Wolf and Secular Hub, The Discussion

This is what secular community is all about;  making special moments happen and being part of it when it does.  It was great fun to be able to help arrange an event where we show a fun documentary with fun people in it and then…one of the stars of the doc walks into the room.

Huge thanks to Matt King and to the Meow Wolf for coming down to the Secular Hub and spending time talking with and answering questions for the community.

Listen to hear many in-depth answers to well-thought-out questions about one of the most interesting art collectives in our time.

Happy Birthday Mister Darwin!

Charles Robert Darwin was born 210 years ago today, which seems like a long time to most humans.  That time is about a microsecond in the geologic time scale (GTS) that expresses the history of our planet.  Would Darwin be impressed by how far our understanding of life has evolved?

Darwin's Tree of evolutionIn 1837, Darwin wrote in his notes (see image) “I think case must be that one generation should have as many living as now. To do this and to have as many species in same genus (as is) requires extinction . Thus between A + B the immense gap of relation. C + B the finest gradation. B+D rather greater distinction. Thus genera would be formed. Bearing relation” (next page begins) “to ancient types with several extinct forms.”

To be fair, it is likely this thought had occurred to other people before this time, but were never published.  It took Darwin, twenty-two years to gather evidence and develop the idea and the courage to publish his most famous work On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life published on November 22, 1859.  In 1844, Darwin wrote to Joseph Dalton Hooker, “At last gleams of light have come, & I am almost convinced (quite contrary to opinion I started with) that species are not (it is like confessing a murder) immutable. Heaven forfend me from Lamarck nonsense of a “tendency to progression” “adaptations from the slow willing of animals…”

Darwin opened up a can of worms or should I say bacteria with his theory which is still being debated today.  Although the debate today is much different than in Darwin’s time.  So like life, knowledge evolves as well.  The tree of life looks much different than Darwin’s first drawing.

Modern tree of lifeWhat strikes me about this modern version of the tree of life is the dominance of bacteria. Bacteria are colored blue, eukaryotes red, and archaea green.  This shows the diversity in bacteria, it does not indicate the abundance of bacteria on earth where the biomass has been estimated to be greater that all plants and animals combined.  Another interesting fact about bacteria is they evolve at a rate that is observable in a short time-frame.  The video below shows bacteria evolving antibiotic resistance in a matter of days.

So the debate continues with many theories on how life evolves, but that is what science is all about, testing theories to find what is the best explanation of reality.

At the end of On the Origin of Species Darwin concluded that:

There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

“Evolved” in the quote above was the only mention of evolution in the first 5 editions of his book.  He finally added the word “evolution” to the sixth edition of his The Origin of Species in 1872 also removing “On” from the title.

Happy birthday to Charles Darwin and the Secular Hub (6 years old).

Episode 33 – Meow Wolf and Secular Hub, The Interview

Matt King and Caity Kennedy in their Garage

No one knows exactly where Meow Wolf lives or where it comes from, but it has entered our universe and it’s not leaving.  There’s a great deal of interest and excitement around Meow Wolf’s permanent Santa Fe location, ‘The House of Eternal Return’ and an unholy amount of anticipation around Meow Wolf’s future permanent locations in Las Vegas and Denver.

Meow Wolf’s new locations are larger than the original (the Meow Wolf’s influence grows constantly!) and there are plans for many locations in many new cities.

Meow Wolf co-founder Matt King visited and joined into conversation with the Secular Hub at the Dinner and a Documentary event for January.  Engaging in a nearly hour long Q-and-A discussion with our community he then sat down before our microphones for a 1-0n-1 interview.

Events such as this are a remarkable example of just what a special place the Secular Hub is.  Hope to see you there soon.

Episode 32 – Humans, Celebrating

For those who live without religion significant and profound human moments can be difficult to really  commemorate.  It seems that important moments, be they:

  • Marriages
  • Funerals and memorials
  • Christenings
  • Retirements

or any other powerful life change requires special acknowledgement.  For instance, when one decides to change one’s gender ‘coming out’ as that new person when the process is done can be extremely helpful for the person and the community.  Similarly, holding a memorial after a loved one dies helps the community remember that person and properly begin to grieve so as to move on.

Tim and Jennifer are registered Life Cycle Celebrants who perform non-religious ceremonies.  Sometimes these are mixed religion ceremonies where the participants desire a non-religious ceremony (so no one feels excluded).  Other times ceremonies performed are for the secular and Humanist society (which is their specialty).

Visit celebratingtimes.com to see what Tim and Jennifer do or to write to them…or on Twitter…or on Facebook

Episode 31 – Womxn’s March 2019

LISTEN.  UNITE.  ACT.

Listen to those who have been silenced.
Unite under the banner of anti-oppression.
Act with intention.

The marching continues.

The very talented Regan Byrd   emcee’d the rally in the morning and introduced the many speakers.  She speaks on intersectionality at one point during the rally and the Hubcast was on hand to catch those words.

Later, Chauncey spoke with three who were marching together and they shared their time and viewpoints on why they were marching.  The conversation is smart and powerful and captures the spirit of the moment.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the 2019 Denver Womxn’s March!

Episode 30 – The Great War Part 3, Final

November 11, 1918 – November 11, 2018

In our final episode on World War 1 Robin, Chauncey, Jesse, and Paul discuss the final episode of PBS.org’s documentary, The Great War:  The American Experience.

Jesse shares from his great-grandfather’s war journal, written during the fighting in the Meuse-Argonne offensive.

This was a fun experience for us.  Was it for you?  Send us your feedback podcast@secularhub.org

The Great War, a documentary on PBS.org it still highly recommended.

Note:  The Great War  is a six hour documentary, served up on PBS.org in three 2-hour segments.  This episode of the Secular Hubcast is drawn on our experience of Part 3 of the documentary only.

Episode 29 – Beyond the Ice Wall – Flat Earth Part 3

Paul and Chauncey continue their discussion on the Flat Earth worldview. Featuring only a single interview with one of the Flat Earth Conference’s speakers, this long-form discussion is designed to give more of a platform and in-depth look at what that worldview is.

What does the flat earth look like?  Is there a real cosmology behind flat earth claims or is it driven by a hidden agenda?  How does one come to believe and then become a promoter of Flat Earth?

Hear Matt Long, Mr Flatworth, in his own words

Growing up in a Doomsday Cult.  Should be a good event, hope you can attend
