Coffee and Community – Episode 69

Sundays are not so holy anymore.  Not if we have anything to say about it.  And so we have coffee and community, a place for nonbelievers to get together.  To share in that tradition and basic human need of community and togetherness is what brings us together.

C & C is one of the Hub’s longest-running and most popular events.  It’s a great way to share a drink, break bread, and share ideas and learn from each other.  Just don’t call it atheist church, thankfully we’re not worshiping or idolizing anything except that blessed molecule, caffeine.

Episode 32 – Humans, Celebrating

For those who live without religion significant and profound human moments can be difficult to really  commemorate.  It seems that important moments, be they:

  • Marriages
  • Funerals and memorials
  • Christenings
  • Retirements

or any other powerful life change requires special acknowledgement.  For instance, when one decides to change one’s gender ‘coming out’ as that new person when the process is done can be extremely helpful for the person and the community.  Similarly, holding a memorial after a loved one dies helps the community remember that person and properly begin to grieve so as to move on.

Tim and Jennifer are registered Life Cycle Celebrants who perform non-religious ceremonies.  Sometimes these are mixed religion ceremonies where the participants desire a non-religious ceremony (so no one feels excluded).  Other times ceremonies performed are for the secular and Humanist society (which is their specialty).

Visit celebratingtimes.com to see what Tim and Jennifer do or to write to them…or on Twitter…or on Facebook

Episode 26 – Dinner and a Documentary

For those with an inquisitive mind documentary films offer education and entertainment, a very satisfying combination.  At the Secular Hub a long-running series of events called Dinner and a Documentary has been providing this satisfaction to Hub members and guests in a group setting.  To make it even better Hub member and professional chef Andrew Curtis Forlines prepares a dinner to share with everybody.  Learn how watching documentaries together makes them better.

Episode 14 – Secular Hub Founders

Five years ago a small group composed of 21 highly motivated individuals came together to form the Secular Hub.  The Hub has become an important community center for many more people since.  Two of those original founders speak here, discussing what atheism and the secular community was like before the Hub existed and how it has changed since.

These two founders have something else in common as well in that both live with cerebral palsy, and they discuss what it means to live and work in America.

According to The Secular Coalition for Colorado’s website:

Atheists for Humanity Inc. is a 501(c)3 charity non-profit based in Denver, Colorado. Our goals are simple: raise money and awareness for worthy charities and actively work to de-stigmatize atheists and atheism

In case you didn’t see it, the Secular Hub got some positive press last year.  Check out the article for a decent characterization of a Sunday morning at the Hub, made possible by the initiative of the founders

Episode 5 – Secular Sisterhood

The cliche that atheists are a bunch of white men has persisted so long because many atheist groups tend to be dominated by them.

Where do freethinking women go for their community?  The Secular Hub is proud of our Secular Sisterhood, a group founded by women to provide a safe place for community, sharing, and support.

In this episode Ruth and Katie discuss what the Secular Sisterhood does, its mission, and what it means to its members.  What was the impetus for forming it in the first place, why was it even needed?

Also discussed in this episode;  the frenzy of sexual assault allegations, denials, and confessions that has dominated the media landscape touches the lives of secular people, too.  Katie and Ruth have a direct and candid discussion on this, and Jesse even gets in on the action to ask a few naive questions.

This is a serious conversation, so strong language and mature conversation occur.  Listen at your own risk.
