Episode 46 – Atheist Culture

“There’s no magic and there’s no magical punishments for not believing”

Like any subculture, Atheism develops it’s own art and culture which is meaningful to those within it.  It’s usually the coolest people within the group who do the work to create that art so it’s nice to be able to sit down with someone cool from the group and get their thoughts.

Paul speaks with podcast newcomer but longtime Secular Hub member Dan.  Dan shares some of his background story and thoughts.  They get into some deep and meaningful stuff.  Dan also shares two original songs with the Hubcast, so please enjoy.

Original Songs: “There A’int No I in Murca” and “Monkey Cop”

Episode 45 – Death Cafe

A Safe Place to Talk about Death

The Death Duo, Heili and Stephanie, join us for a delightful discussion about death and dying.  This can be a very difficult topic to discuss, but it is very important to give thought and attention to what may happen to us before it is too late.

As painful as the topic can be it can also be a lot of fun to think about, if you’re with the right people.  In this discussion we cover everything from choosing when to go into hospice, to coping with or supporting the dying, to alternative ways to care for one’s remains.

Talking about dying with loved ones is difficult.  Use this starter kit to help you.  Before it’s TOO LATE!

I guess it’s true.  We live in a world where Luke Perry can be buried in a mushroom suit

National Day of Reason

WHEREAS, the application of reason, more than any other means, has proven to offer hope for human survival upon Earth, improving conditions within the universe, and cultivating intelligent, moral and ethical interactions among people and their environments, and

WHEREAS, those who wrote the Constitution of the United States of America, the basic document for governing the affairs of humankind within the United States, based it upon principles delineated within the philosophies distinguishing the historical Age of Reason, and

WHEREAS, most citizens of the United States purport to value reason and its application, and

WHEREAS, it is the duty and responsibility of every citizen to promote the development and application of reason

NOW, THEREFORE, I Dirk Huizenga, Director of the Secular Hub, hereby proclaim Thursday, the 2nd day of May, 2019 a

NATIONAL DAY OF REASON

and I encourage all citizens, residents and visitors to join in observing this day and focusing upon the employment of reason, critical thought, the scientific method, and free inquiry to the resolution of human problems and for the welfare of humankind.

I just wish my President, Governor, Mayor had done this instead of me!  To be fair, Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock did it in 2016.  I guess we have to remind them every year.

Episode 44 – Clyde Zaidins PhD, Nuclear Astrophysicist

Today on the Hubcast our host Paul speaks to an esteemed Hub member:  Clyde Zaidins, PhD.  Dr. Clyde is Professor Emeritus in Physics at the University of Colorado Denver.  Clyde has been hosting and organizing science talks that take place at the Hub ever since he was asked in to be a guest at an event in the summer of 2018.

Episode 41 – All Rise

The Humanist Legal Society held an event in Denver on 21 March, 2019 with Colorado Supreme Court Justice Melissa Hart.  It was a great opportunity for legal professionals and complete novices (guilty as charged!) to gather in an informal, casual setting for a nice discussion.

Access of this sort is generally not available so as an event it was a knockout.  Hub board member and Founder Becky Greben joins the discussion afterward.

Welcome, newly-organized Denver branch of the Humanist Legal Society!  We look forward to many adventures to come.

Episode 40 – Feeding on the News 2

News.

It pours down upon us in an endless stream, relentless and ruthless.  It can drive one to withdraw and say “To HELL with the world.  I’m not paying attention anymore!”

But it’s my world, too, and yours. So it’s on all of us to care, to pay attention.  Join us, pay attention and form your own opinions.  The propaganda out there is strong, the antidote is alertness and vigilange.

Join us.

Episode 39 – Logical Episode

A wise man once told me:  a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.  In this episode Chauncey, Paul, and Jesse attempt to increase their knowledge of one of humankind’s oldest mental disciplines:  LOGIC.

Everybody likes to claim to be logical.  But how many of us can define it or exercise it in life?  Why do so many people make so many illogical decisions all the time?

In addition to defining and explaining, we discuss some real world logical arguments put forth by some highly questionable sources.  Let’s just say, the logic doesn’t quite hold up.

Check out the FIELD GUIDE TO CRITICAL THINKING.  Very good stuff.  We have barely scratched it in our discussions, really.

Episode 38 – Ask Me Anything

Atheists need to be more visible in society and it is accomplished by individuals getting out there and making themselves so.  This can be a little awkward at times but is always a good time.  Chauncey, Paul, and Jesse relate some of the weirder stories from past events volunteering.

The discussion flows into the meaning of life, death and everything else.  This is very similar to how some of these Ask An Atheist day discussions can go.
