Episode 28 – Mark Horowitz: Social Scientist

Politics is poison.  Our world is divided by politics and tribalism.  Is there a way to use data and rationalism to bring people together rather than to divide them?

In a wide ranging discussion Seton Hall professor Mark Horowitz discusses these and many concepts with us.  This discussion is an extension of a talk Mark gave at the Secular Hub as well as an awesome bull session (you shoulda been there) that took place later at Pint’s Pub

Also joining the Hubcast for the first time is podcast host and author Chris Shelton.  Fun fact:  Chis Shelton is a Secular Hub Board of Directors member in addition to his many other talents and responsibilities.

Episode 27 – The Longest Night

Happy New Year!  The year’s end is a time for being with the people most important to us, saying goodbye to the past, and looking forward to the future.

Celebrations around this time of year can sometimes be difficult for nonbelievers, especially without the received ceremonies and traditions that our religious friends can rely on.  That’s why the Secular Hub opens up with its own traditions and parties.

In this slice-of-life recording, Jesse gets several Hub members to open up about traditions, volunteerism, and other topics important to those being interviewed.  It’s also a party, and you can hear all the fun and merriment that Hubsters are known for!

Watch the ceremony where Pvt. Henry Johnson was *finally, after 100 years* awarded with the American Medal of Honor.  It’s short and beautiful.  Thanks, Obama

The Great War, a documentary on PBS.org has been our guiding light in this journey, and we recommend you watch/view it.   The past is there to be learned from.  Make yourself wiser.

Note:  The Great War  is a six hour documentary, served up on PBS.org in three 2-hour segments.  This episode of the Secular Hubcast is drawn on our experience of Part 2 of the documentary only.

This edition of the Secular Hubcast is the first part of a four part series detailing the flat earth movement in all of its splendor. Listen in as we discuss the views, questions, conclusions and claims made by the folks we interviewed.

Episode 22 – Happy TurkeyGiving Day

Thanksgiving at the Hub!
What a remarkable holiday.  The need to belong and be together is universal among all humans and special days on the calendar help remind us of that.   Thanksgiving at the Hub is a real treat.  The food gets cooked early and the guests are always on time.
Ruth and Jesse have been hosting Thanksgiving dinner at the Hub for the last few years.  The tables all get pushed together banquet style, so imagine the dining hall at Hogwarts excepts it’s full of freethinkers instead of wizards.
There’s much feasting, talking, and laughing and everyone is invited to participate in and experience the rich moment we create together.
Host: Jesse Gilbertson
Guest: Ruth McLeod, many others

Episode 19 – SciBabe and Secular Hub!

SciBabe, YVETTE D’ENTREMONT – SCIENTIST – WRITER – PUBLIC SPEAKER – FUNNY PERSON

At least that’s how her website, SciBabe.com, describes her.  We here in Denver know her a little better than all that.

Yvette D’Entremont, better known as SciBabe, recently visited us here in the Secular Hub to share her thoughts and strategies for parsing true information from BS, SciBabe’s Guide to BS Detection.  This was, of course, after the VIP dinner with select Hub members as well as talking with us for the HubCast.

She took the time to speak with and share in the Secular Hub community and helped make all of us better media and information consumers.  She did this by demonstrating her brainpower and wit by putting on a great show.

Hosts: Jesse Gilbertson, Greg Duoros
Guest: Yvette D’Entremont
