Episode 56 – Guns and the 2nd Amendment: Carving a Path Through

Join us for this diverse episode featuring Jesse Gilbertson, Chris Shelton and Melissa Shelton as we walk the rocky path of guns, gun ownership and the Second Amendment. In this episode we talk straight about gun rights, the moral implications of guns and what we think are the best solutions for how to solve our nations gun issues. The conversation takes twists and turns and sometimes even goes in circles as we test out our critical thinking skills. Hopefully, by the end you’ll have a clear understanding of the issues, where you stand on the subject and where we stand. I want to thank Jesse, Chris and Mel for putting up with all my questions and thought experiments as I know they are not everyone’s favorite exercise. I hope that it was all worth going through in order to fully flush out exactly what our values are regarding guns and how we came to our final conclusions. Please come down to the Secular Hub next Sunday at 10am for coffee and community and if want to discuss it further, I’m all ears.

Episode 55 – Increase Your Liberty

REX

Liberty is a tricky subject to talk about.  It’s complex and personal and in some ways lends itself to magical thinking.  It’s as if it somehow pervades the universe or we’re endowed by some creator.

But really it’s just a concept.  Can we think about it scientifically?  Can we analyse a sample in a petri dish and watch it grow?  In this episode we consider how you can increase your liberty

HOST, EDITOR:  Jesse Gilbertson

Notes:

We started with the Bill of Rights

I referred to incarceration in US as being over 2 million souls.  The jibes with Wikipedia

The Bureau of Justice Statistics measures it a little different, and came up with a different result

Here’s what John Oliver said about net neutrality.  I love him.  It’s too late, but still funny as hell

Episode 53 – Interview With a Noobie

One lovely thing about becoming a Hub member is meeting all the folks who are visiting the Hub for the first time.  It can be refreshing/renewing as an atheist to talk with those for whom atheist community is a new thing.

The fear, confusion, rejection these folks are going through can be new and raw.  Hearing it puts us back in touch with what it was like when we were going through those steps of our own journey.  The freedom, possibility and exhilaration is there, too, and those feelings can be just as powerful.

When you see someone new at the Hub, welcome them.  That’s what we’re here to do.

Episode 47 – We Read the Mueller Report! part 1

The Mueller Report is vast and complex.  Any telling of it will be limited.  Even a full reading of it would be inadequate, since the report is but a condensed version of a nearly two year investigation.

We have read the report and that’s today’s story.  As a nation we need to understand what has happened and what continues to happen.  How do we proceed as a people?

Want to read the original order from D/Attorney General Rod Rosenstein establishing the Mueller investigation in the first place?  It’s only one page long, double spaced.

On 6 January, 2017 the US intelligence community released it’s assessment that Russia was very likely behind an attack on the 2016 US election.

Haven’t gotten your own copy of the Mueller Report yet?  Just pop on over to the Dept of Justice website for that

Sergei Magnitsky attempted to reveal corruption in the Russian government and subsequently died in Russian custody after suffering great torture.  He should be remembered

Episode 45 – Death Cafe

A Safe Place to Talk about Death

The Death Duo, Heili and Stephanie, join us for a delightful discussion about death and dying.  This can be a very difficult topic to discuss, but it is very important to give thought and attention to what may happen to us before it is too late.

As painful as the topic can be it can also be a lot of fun to think about, if you’re with the right people.  In this discussion we cover everything from choosing when to go into hospice, to coping with or supporting the dying, to alternative ways to care for one’s remains.

Are you interested in learning more about Death Cafe or hosting one of your own?  Visit the official site to join the community

Talking about dying with loved ones is difficult.  Use this starter kit to help you.  Before it’s TOO LATE!

I guess it’s true.  We live in a world where Luke Perry can be buried in a mushroom suit

Episode 41 – All Rise

The Humanist Legal Society held an event in Denver on 21 March, 2019 with Colorado Supreme Court Justice Melissa Hart.  It was a great opportunity for legal professionals and complete novices (guilty as charged!) to gather in an informal, casual setting for a nice discussion.

Access of this sort is generally not available so as an event it was a knockout.  Hub board member and Founder Becky Greben joins the discussion afterward.

Welcome, newly-organized Denver branch of the Humanist Legal Society!  We look forward to many adventures to come.

Episode 40 – Feeding on the News 2

News.

It pours down upon us in an endless stream, relentless and ruthless.  It can drive one to withdraw and say “To HELL with the world.  I’m not paying attention anymore!”

But it’s my world, too, and yours. So it’s on all of us to care, to pay attention.  Join us, pay attention and form your own opinions.  The propaganda out there is strong, the antidote is alertness and vigilange.

Join us.
