Episode 55 – Increase Your Liberty

REX

Liberty is a tricky subject to talk about.  It’s complex and personal and in some ways lends itself to magical thinking.  It’s as if it somehow pervades the universe or we’re endowed by some creator.

But really it’s just a concept.  Can we think about it scientifically?  Can we analyse a sample in a petri dish and watch it grow?  In this episode we consider how you can increase your liberty

HOST, EDITOR:  Jesse Gilbertson

Notes:

We started with the Bill of Rights

I referred to incarceration in US as being over 2 million souls.  The jibes with Wikipedia

The Bureau of Justice Statistics measures it a little different, and came up with a different result

Here’s what John Oliver said about net neutrality.  I love him.  It’s too late, but still funny as hell

Episode 53 – Interview With a Noobie

One lovely thing about becoming a Hub member is meeting all the folks who are visiting the Hub for the first time.  It can be refreshing/renewing as an atheist to talk with those for whom atheist community is a new thing.

The fear, confusion, rejection these folks are going through can be new and raw.  Hearing it puts us back in touch with what it was like when we were going through those steps of our own journey.  The freedom, possibility and exhilaration is there, too, and those feelings can be just as powerful.

When you see someone new at the Hub, welcome them.  That’s what we’re here to do.

Episode 51 – Becoming Atheist

Some say we are born atheist and religion is placed on us only after we are old enough to absorb it.  That may be true, yet why do so many atheists need to leave a faith community?  It what ways can it be simple or difficult?

Describing one’s deconversion story can be a powerful way for atheists to meet and share ideas.  Learning why someone left a community to face the real world on their own can give one great insight into who they really are.

Join Chauncey and Jesse as they describe their journey’s from faith to atheism.

You should totally come to Apogaea next year!  It was awesome!

If that’s not your thing check out Mike the Headless Chicken Day instead!

Episode 49 – Abortion Rights. Right?

The topic of abortion is never far from the news.  It’s a subject that affects many very deeply and it tends to bring forth strong, powerful emotions and opinions.

For this episode the Secular Hubcast turns to two of its female members to help explain, first the dramatic new law banning abortions in the state of Alabama and then explores pending legislation from across the nation.

This conversation is deep and very real, so enter with that in mind.

Would you like to read the Alabama law for yourself?

Super Freakonomics isn’t paying us to say nice things about them, but they ought to

Episode 48 – It’s Mueller Time! part 2, final

The injury to the integrity of the justice system is the same regardless of whether a person committed an underlying wrong

Welcome back to the thrilling conclusion, Volume II of the Special Report!  In this episode the team discusses the special counsel investigation into potentially obstructive behavior on the part of the President of the United States.

Would you like to watch the extended interview between Donald Trump and Lester Holt on NBC instead of just hearing our pathetic, out-of-context snip?

Episode 47 – We Read the Mueller Report! part 1

The Mueller Report is vast and complex.  Any telling of it will be limited.  Even a full reading of it would be inadequate, since the report is but a condensed version of a nearly two year investigation.

We have read the report and that’s today’s story.  As a nation we need to understand what has happened and what continues to happen.  How do we proceed as a people?

Want to read the original order from D/Attorney General Rod Rosenstein establishing the Mueller investigation in the first place?  It’s only one page long, double spaced.

On 6 January, 2017 the US intelligence community released it’s assessment that Russia was very likely behind an attack on the 2016 US election.

Haven’t gotten your own copy of the Mueller Report yet?  Just pop on over to the Dept of Justice website for that

Sergei Magnitsky attempted to reveal corruption in the Russian government and subsequently died in Russian custody after suffering great torture.  He should be remembered

Episode 46 – Atheist Culture

“There’s no magic and there’s no magical punishments for not believing”

Like any subculture, Atheism develops it’s own art and culture which is meaningful to those within it.  It’s usually the coolest people within the group who do the work to create that art so it’s nice to be able to sit down with someone cool from the group and get their thoughts.

Paul speaks with podcast newcomer but longtime Secular Hub member Dan.  Dan shares some of his background story and thoughts.  They get into some deep and meaningful stuff.  Dan also shares two original songs with the Hubcast, so please enjoy.

Original Songs: “There A’int No I in Murca” and “Monkey Cop”
