Episode 36 – Thinking About Thinking

We are all thinking all the time.  With some of us it might not always appears so, but our minds are running constantly.  Opinions, beliefs, evidence,  facts; all these elements combine and form in our minds.

Critical thought is a manner of thinking that will lead to greater and more factual understanding of the universe.  It relies on measurements and evidence and avoiding problems in thinking to reveal truths and separate them from falsehoods.

But truth is an ongoing process.  Truth is always tentative.  In this discussion Jesse and Paul get into the complexity of it all to break it down and simplify it.

In this episode we rely pretty heavily on a piece of writing called “A Field Guide to Critical Thinking” by James Lett.  Check it out and let us know what we got wrong in this episode.

Episode 34, Meow Wolf and Secular Hub, The Discussion

This is what secular community is all about;  making special moments happen and being part of it when it does.  It was great fun to be able to help arrange an event where we show a fun documentary with fun people in it and then…one of the stars of the doc walks into the room.

Huge thanks to Matt King and to the Meow Wolf for coming down to the Secular Hub and spending time talking with and answering questions for the community.

Listen to hear many in-depth answers to well-thought-out questions about one of the most interesting art collectives in our time.

Episode 33 – Meow Wolf and Secular Hub, The Interview

Matt King and Caity Kennedy in their Garage

No one knows exactly where Meow Wolf lives or where it comes from, but it has entered our universe and it’s not leaving.  There’s a great deal of interest and excitement around Meow Wolf’s permanent Santa Fe location, ‘The House of Eternal Return’ and an unholy amount of anticipation around Meow Wolf’s future permanent locations in Las Vegas and Denver.

Meow Wolf’s new locations are larger than the original (the Meow Wolf’s influence grows constantly!) and there are plans for many locations in many new cities.

Meow Wolf co-founder Matt King visited and joined into conversation with the Secular Hub at the Dinner and a Documentary event for January.  Engaging in a nearly hour long Q-and-A discussion with our community he then sat down before our microphones for a 1-0n-1 interview.

Events such as this are a remarkable example of just what a special place the Secular Hub is.  Hope to see you there soon.

Episode 32 – Humans, Celebrating

For those who live without religion significant and profound human moments can be difficult to really  commemorate.  It seems that important moments, be they:

  • Marriages
  • Funerals and memorials
  • Christenings
  • Retirements

or any other powerful life change requires special acknowledgement.  For instance, when one decides to change one’s gender ‘coming out’ as that new person when the process is done can be extremely helpful for the person and the community.  Similarly, holding a memorial after a loved one dies helps the community remember that person and properly begin to grieve so as to move on.

Tim and Jennifer are registered Life Cycle Celebrants who perform non-religious ceremonies.  Sometimes these are mixed religion ceremonies where the participants desire a non-religious ceremony (so no one feels excluded).  Other times ceremonies performed are for the secular and Humanist society (which is their specialty).

Visit celebratingtimes.com to see what Tim and Jennifer do or to write to them…or on Twitter…or on Facebook

Episode 30 – The Great War Part 3, Final

November 11, 1918 – November 11, 2018

In our final episode on World War 1 Robin, Chauncey, Jesse, and Paul discuss the final episode of PBS.org’s documentary, The Great War:  The American Experience.

Jesse shares from his great-grandfather’s war journal, written during the fighting in the Meuse-Argonne offensive.

This was a fun experience for us.  Was it for you?  Send us your feedback podcast@secularhub.org

The Great War, a documentary on PBS.org it still highly recommended.

Note:  The Great War  is a six hour documentary, served up on PBS.org in three 2-hour segments.  This episode of the Secular Hubcast is drawn on our experience of Part 3 of the documentary only.

Episode 29 – Beyond the Ice Wall – Flat Earth Part 3

Paul and Chauncey continue their discussion on the Flat Earth worldview. Featuring only a single interview with one of the Flat Earth Conference’s speakers, this long-form discussion is designed to give more of a platform and in-depth look at what that worldview is.

What does the flat earth look like?  Is there a real cosmology behind flat earth claims or is it driven by a hidden agenda?  How does one come to believe and then become a promoter of Flat Earth?

Hear Matt Long, Mr Flatworth, in his own words

Episode 22 – Happy TurkeyGiving Day

Thanksgiving at the Hub!
What a remarkable holiday.  The need to belong and be together is universal among all humans and special days on the calendar help remind us of that.   Thanksgiving at the Hub is a real treat.  The food gets cooked early and the guests are always on time.
Ruth and Jesse have been hosting Thanksgiving dinner at the Hub for the last few years.  The tables all get pushed together banquet style, so imagine the dining hall at Hogwarts excepts it’s full of freethinkers instead of wizards.
There’s much feasting, talking, and laughing and everyone is invited to participate in and experience the rich moment we create together.
