Andrew L. Seidel, Author and Attorney – Episode 65

On September 7, 2019 Andrew Seidel visited the Secular Hub and spoke to a packed house.  The Hubcast was on hand to catch his talk as well as the audience participation time afterward.

Andrew Seidel has been working with Freedom From Religion Foundation for years and has come to be posted as the Director of Strategic Response.  As a trial lawyer he has argued successfully in favor of free speech and the separation of church and state.

In his new book, The Founding Myth, Why Christian Nationalism is Un-American, Andrew discusses his research on our nation’s beginnings, what was happening in America at the time, and what it means for us today.  This was a fantastic event at the Hub and we at the Hubcast are proud to present the audio from this great event.

GUESTS:

From Freedom From Religion Foundation, Director of Strategic Response, Andrew Seidel

From Denver Metro FFRF Chapter,  Claudette and Joel

Atheists Who Help – Episode 62

All hail the Volunteer Queen!

Doesn’t it seem like it can be really hard to help sometimes?  Many of us have the impulse and desire to help but don’t know how to make a meaningful difference.  It’s common enough to look for a group, an organization already established to make it easier.

Monique is our guest this episode and we discuss how a group makes those volunteer opportunities available in the first place.  Monique is a long-term volunteer and Hub member, currently holding three volunteer positions including:

Check out Heart 9/11.  This organization is designed to help first responders, and it is the organization our Chili Cook Off will be benefitting.

Episode 49 – Abortion Rights. Right?

The topic of abortion is never far from the news.  It’s a subject that affects many very deeply and it tends to bring forth strong, powerful emotions and opinions.

For this episode the Secular Hubcast turns to two of its female members to help explain, first the dramatic new law banning abortions in the state of Alabama and then explores pending legislation from across the nation.

This conversation is deep and very real, so enter with that in mind.

Would you like to read the Alabama law for yourself?

Super Freakonomics isn’t paying us to say nice things about them, but they ought to

National Day of Reason

WHEREAS, the application of reason, more than any other means, has proven to offer hope for human survival upon Earth, improving conditions within the universe, and cultivating intelligent, moral and ethical interactions among people and their environments, and

WHEREAS, those who wrote the Constitution of the United States of America, the basic document for governing the affairs of humankind within the United States, based it upon principles delineated within the philosophies distinguishing the historical Age of Reason, and

WHEREAS, most citizens of the United States purport to value reason and its application, and

WHEREAS, it is the duty and responsibility of every citizen to promote the development and application of reason

NOW, THEREFORE, I Dirk Huizenga, Director of the Secular Hub, hereby proclaim Thursday, the 2nd day of May, 2019 a

NATIONAL DAY OF REASON

and I encourage all citizens, residents and visitors to join in observing this day and focusing upon the employment of reason, critical thought, the scientific method, and free inquiry to the resolution of human problems and for the welfare of humankind.

I just wish my President, Governor, Mayor had done this instead of me!  To be fair, Gov. John Hickenlooper and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock did it in 2016.  I guess we have to remind them every year.

Episode 40 – Feeding on the News 2

News.

It pours down upon us in an endless stream, relentless and ruthless.  It can drive one to withdraw and say “To HELL with the world.  I’m not paying attention anymore!”

But it’s my world, too, and yours. So it’s on all of us to care, to pay attention.  Join us, pay attention and form your own opinions.  The propaganda out there is strong, the antidote is alertness and vigilange.

Join us.

Episode 38 – Ask Me Anything

Atheists need to be more visible in society and it is accomplished by individuals getting out there and making themselves so.  This can be a little awkward at times but is always a good time.  Chauncey, Paul, and Jesse relate some of the weirder stories from past events volunteering.

The discussion flows into the meaning of life, death and everything else.  This is very similar to how some of these Ask An Atheist day discussions can go.

Episode 36 – Thinking About Thinking

We are all thinking all the time.  With some of us it might not always appears so, but our minds are running constantly.  Opinions, beliefs, evidence,  facts; all these elements combine and form in our minds.

Critical thought is a manner of thinking that will lead to greater and more factual understanding of the universe.  It relies on measurements and evidence and avoiding problems in thinking to reveal truths and separate them from falsehoods.

But truth is an ongoing process.  Truth is always tentative.  In this discussion Jesse and Paul get into the complexity of it all to break it down and simplify it.

In this episode we rely pretty heavily on a piece of writing called “A Field Guide to Critical Thinking” by James Lett.  Check it out and let us know what we got wrong in this episode.

Episode 34, Meow Wolf and Secular Hub, The Discussion

This is what secular community is all about;  making special moments happen and being part of it when it does.  It was great fun to be able to help arrange an event where we show a fun documentary with fun people in it and then…one of the stars of the doc walks into the room.

Huge thanks to Matt King and to the Meow Wolf for coming down to the Secular Hub and spending time talking with and answering questions for the community.

Listen to hear many in-depth answers to well-thought-out questions about one of the most interesting art collectives in our time.
