Doesn’t it seem like it can be really hard to help sometimes?  Many of us have the impulse and desire to help but don’t know how to make a meaningful difference.  It’s common enough to look for a group, an organization already established to make it easier.

Monique is our guest this episode and we discuss how a group makes those volunteer opportunities available in the first place.  Monique is a long-term volunteer and Hub member, currently holding three volunteer positions including:

One great thing about the Secular Hub is that there is no religious affiliation to the group.  Just go there and you’re free from religion, dogma, indoctrination.

But that doesn’t mean we’re totally cut off and removed from all the people out there who do practice.  In fact, many of our members came out of some form of religious tradition.

What makes people stay in religion, or leave religion?  It’s a trade off with positives and negatives, so what makes one person stay in a religion and another person leave?

Today we speak with someone who stayed.  Mark Gomez is the pastor of SOLA church in Littleton, Colorado.  He’s been active in that community for years but came into studio to share a little in the atheist community we have here in Denver.

Once again we at the Hubcast delve into the news.  It never stops flowing and by paying attention over time we hope to learn and grow more, and possibly achieve some kind of wisdom and familiarity with the world.

First we discuss the testimony of Robert Mueller before Congress.  We also look at developments in the stories of well known pedophiles and child pornographers.  Not a pretty subject but one we shouldn’t be afraid to speak of.  Especially as we look at alleged connections between these shady figures and our own government.

Join us for this diverse episode featuring Jesse Gilbertson, Chris Shelton and Melissa Shelton as we walk the rocky path of guns, gun ownership and the Second Amendment. In this episode we talk straight about gun rights, the moral implications of guns and what we think are the best solutions for how to solve our nations gun issues. The conversation takes twists and turns and sometimes even goes in circles as we test out our critical thinking skills. Hopefully, by the end you’ll have a clear understanding of the issues, where you stand on the subject and where we stand. I want to thank Jesse, Chris and Mel for putting up with all my questions and thought experiments as I know they are not everyone’s favorite exercise. I hope that it was all worth going through in order to fully flush out exactly what our values are regarding guns and how we came to our final conclusions. One lovely thing about becoming a Hub member is meeting all the folks who are visiting the Hub for the first time.  It can be refreshing/renewing as an atheist to talk with those for whom atheist community is a new thing.

The fear, confusion, rejection these folks are going through can be new and raw.  Hearing it puts us back in touch with what it was like when we were going through those steps of our own journey.  The freedom, possibility and exhilaration is there, too, and those feelings can be just as powerful.

When you see someone new at the Hub, welcome them.  That’s what we’re here to do.

Some say we are born atheist and religion is placed on us only after we are old enough to absorb it.  That may be true, yet why do so many atheists need to leave a faith community?  It what ways can it be simple or difficult?

Describing one’s deconversion story can be a powerful way for atheists to meet and share ideas.  Learning why someone left a community to face the real world on their own can give one great insight into who they really are.

Join Chauncey and Jesse as they describe their journey’s from faith to atheism.
