Many of us have heard of CRISPR, but did you know CRISPR-Cas contradicts Darwin’s concept of evolution? The role of CRISPR-Cas in nature is surprising and more interesting than the medical applications of this gene-editing machine (really!). Lee Shapiro will show what CRISPR-Cas is, why it is referred to as a medical and ethical “game changer”, and why the discoverers are considered strong choices for future Nobel Prizes. The presentation uses animations and intuitive descriptions designed to be informative and entertaining.
Dr. Leland Shapiro is Associate Professor at CU Anschutz Medical Center and Staff Physician at the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He is known for discovering an important natural inhibitor of the AIDS virus in human blood. His background includes medical practice and medical research, graduate work in philosophy, and table tennis.
