Rick Rottman

Rick Rottman

In honor of Darwin “month”  Rick Rottman, is presenting a talk on Alexander von Humboldt.  He was one of the most influential minds of the 19th century.  He used his personal fortune to travel the world on scientific expeditions that mixed “extreme sports” with exact quantitative methods, thereby founding what we now think of as the “New Geography” of that century.  Charles Darwin described him as “the greatest scientific traveler who ever lived.”

“Rick has worked in aerospace and in gold exploration, including several years in Russia.  He is interested in world history, travel, and foreign languages.  He speaks German, Russian and Spanish.”
