Join us at the Secular Hub on Saturday, March 23rd at 3:00 p.m. as we welcome Leo Igwe, Nigerian Human Rights Activist and Humanist for his talk A New Future for Atheism and Humanism in Africa.
Donations will be collected at the door ($10 suggested minimum donation) to offset travel expenses and to support Leo's efforts to promote Humanism and Critical Thinking and to combat witch-hunting in African countries.
About the Talk: Existing statistics show that millions of non-religious people exist in the world's most religious continent, Africa. Incidentally, atheism, humanism and freethought are not as quite visible. Humanists and Atheists suffer persecution and discrimination in many African countries. They go about their everyday life as second class citizens or potential 'criminals'. In an increasingly interdependent world, reasons for limited, and in some cases non visibility of humanists and atheists in Africa are local and international. The factors are intricately linked and need to be adequately situated if humanism and atheism must thrive and flourish in 21st century Africa. Using cases from the region, Leo will discuss some of these forces at play and the need to combat and contain these threats and will articulate a new vision and future for atheism and humanism that is in tune with our times. Leo will also touch on his work to combat persecution of alleged witches which persists in sub–Saharan Africa. This is going to be a fascinating can't miss event!
About our Speaker: Leo Igwe is a board member of the Humanist Association of Nigeria and Humanists International. He holds a masters in philosophy, and a doctoral degree in religious studies from the University of Bayreuth in Germany and wrote his doctoral thesis on witchcraft accusations in Northern Ghana.
